Abstract

A filter tip cigarette has a filter element in the form of a cylinder constituted by preferably uniformly-sized particles, bonded together substantially at their points of contact only, of "active" cellulose acetate flake, i.e. cellulose acetate precipitated, as by addition of water, in flocculent form from solution in acetic acid or other solvent and, preferably, then washed. As described, the cylinder is cut.off from extruded and dried rod formed (1) by spraying sieved particles with an aqueous solution of a water-soluble adhesive such as starch, feculose or methyl cellulose, (2) by mixing sieved particles with such an adhesive in powdered form and moistening as by steaming until the adhesive is dissolved or (3) by treating sieved particles with the vapour of a volatile solvent such as acetone to dissolve their surface only, rod extensions then being dipped into water to restore the particles completely to "active" cellulose acetate flake form. According to the Provisional Specification, the filter elements may be used in cigarette holders.
