730,336. Printing machines. RAS, M. March 25, 1953 [March 26, 1952], No. 8197/53. Class 100 (2). Damping apparatus.-The plate cylinder of an offset lithographic machine is damped by apparatus including a wetting roller 3 and a water-discharge nozzle 6 directed towards the roller and mounted on guide means 4 for movement along the length of the roller. The nozzle is adapted to form a plain flow or jet of water as distinct from a spray. The guide means comprise a pair of spaced parallel channel-section members having their open sides facing so as to provide runner tracks for rollers 5 attached to the nozzle. The nozzle is connected by a flexible hose 7 to feed pipe 8. At the other end pipe 8 enters a reservoir 11 above the level of the nozzle. The nozzle is regulated by a valve 10 or by raising or lowering the reservoir. Alternatively a variable output pump may be used. More than one nozzle may be provided which may be independently movable along the guides, if desired. The roller 3 may deliver water direct to the plate cylinder or one or two transfer cylinders may be interposed as shown. The nozzle may be moved along the guides either manually or automatically.
