Abstract

729,602. Sighting telescopes. ZEISS STIFTUNG, C., [trading as ZEISS, C. [Firm of].]. Feb. 24, 1953 [Feb. 27, 1952], No. 5078/53. Class 97 (1). To maintain the line of sight of a telescope constant independent of small rotations about a horizontal axis it is combined with a collective system receiving light from the object and directing it to a small accessory mirror located in its focal plane whence it passes to a concave spherical mirror also having its focus at the auxiliary mirror so forming a collimated beam which passes to the telescope, the concave mirror being pendulously mounted about a point lying on the optical axis of the collective system as mirrored by the small mirror and at a distance from the centre of curvature of the concave mirror equal to the focal length of the collective system. As shown, light from the object, after passing a Schmidt correcting plate b is focused by a concave mirror a on a small mirror c fixed relative thereto. Light from this image is collimated by a spherical mirror d, passes a Schmidt plate e at the centre of curvature A of the mirror d and reaches the observing telescope g, h via a mirror f. The concave reflector d and plate e are pivoted about point B, the distance of which from the point A is equal to the focal length of the mirror a. All the elements except the mirror d and plate e are rigidly attached together so that as they execute small oscillations about an horizontal axis the mirror d and plate e remain fixed with respect to the vertical and so maintain the line of sight through the centre i of the telescope graticule.
