[Also in Group XXVIII] A pressure relief valve assembly comprises a body 1 having an inside annular shoulder 7 and a pressure fluid inlet 2 and outlet 3, a ported cage 5a having an end adjacent the shoulder, a packing ring 8 in a recess formed between the shoulder and the end sealing with a valve member 16 when the latter is in one position, and a leakage passage between the cage and body leading from the recess to the outlet for causing the fluid to retain the packing ring within the recess when the valve moves out of sealed engagement with the ring. The valve is loaded by a nest of annular, inwardly diverging plate springs 35, 36 accommodated in outer and inner retainers 31, 32 and located between a shoulder 30 on the valve stem 18 and an adjusting nut 28 on a body extension 14 in which the stem slides, the loading decreasing with opening of the valve. The valve may be releasably detained in its fully closed or open positions by stem shoulders 26, 27 respectively engaging shoulders 25, 24 on a slit detention sleeve 23, the shoulders being released when the sleeve is expanded laterally under fluid or spring pressure. The assembly is shown as an outlet relief valve for a high stage pump, the valve stem carrying a piston 19 exposed to the pump inlet pressure or the outlet pressure from a low stage pump. When the assembly is used as an outlet relief valve on the low stage pump, the piston 19 is omitted. In a modification, the plate springs are replaced by radially disposed coiled springs inclined to the valve axis and pivoted on the body and valve.
