Abstract
An instrument for determining the nature of a gas comprises a self-excited oscillator supplying electrical energy to one or more sending transducers adapted to transmit sound energy through a vessel containing a variant gas, one or more receiving transducers for the sound energy transmitted, and means for comparing the electrical signals received as regards phase and amplitude with those obtained by the passage of sound energy through a datum gas. The presence of methane and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere of a mine may be detected. The instrument may be made of portable size by employing ultrasonic frequencies. As shown, high frequency alternating current is supplied by an oscillator 10 to transducers 11, 16; perforated tube 13 is accessible to the gas being tested, and sealed tube 18 contains a known gas; sound energy is converted back to electrical energy by transducers 12, 17. A difference in velocity through the tubes causes a change in phase relationship in the outputs of 12, 17, which is measured by phase meter 14 comprising a ring modulator; attenuation of the sound energy causes an amplitude difference of the outputs measured by a voltmeter. The measuring means may comprise a relay-operated signalling device. Apparatus is described in which the two tubes are arranged side by side in a box and a water wick maintains a constant <PICT:0727891/III/1> moisture condition in the gas being tested. In alternative forms of apparatus (a) the tubes are in line with a double-diaphragm transducer arranged between their ends; (b) the tubes are formed by bores in a single body, and a transducer, separated from the bores by a diaphragm, is arranged at each end of the body; (c) the tubes are curved and their ends are connected to two double-diaphragm transducers.
