727,569. Shrinking fabrics. BRADFORD DYERS' ASSOCIATION, Ltd. May 28, 1952 [May 28, 1951], No. 12473/51. Class 42 (1). A collar or other stitched fabric article having parts differing in thickness is compressively shrunk in an apparatus of the kind in which an endless belt 1 changes its curvature while passing over two end rollers 2, 3 and being pressed against roller 2 by an intermediate roller 4 contracts in so doing, the article being pressed against the surface of the belt and contracting with it; the belt is made of a material such that pressures applied by it to the parts of different thickness are substantially proportional to those thicknesses, and is positively driven by roller 3 so that the driving thrust transmitted through the article is small. The required property of the belt is stated to be provided by a material (e.g. a synthetic or natural rubber) having a Shore hardness of 45 to 55 degrees. Roller 4, which is pressed into operative position by a cam 5 controlled by a handle 7, is heated to a temperature of 320-390‹ F. to render the article plastic and to set the shrinkage. Roller 2 may be driven, in addition to roller 3. The article may be slightly underfed to the shrinking operation by a pair of nip rolls 11 rotating at a peripheral speed rather lower than that of the other rollers.
