[Also in Group XXII] In making a scraper piston ring a circumferential groove or step is formed in the outer periphery of a ring blank, the groove &c. is filled with acidresisting material, the ring is chromium plated at the same time as and when assembled with a number of similar rings and the oil holes or slots, extending to the interior of the ring are formed subsequently. A circumferential groove b, Fig. 1, formed in a cast iron ring a is filled with a cellulose base paint, a number of similar rings are assembled on a cylindrical holder and chromium c is electrodeposited on the rings. Subsequently, slots or holes d are formed in the rings. A ring a, Fig. 2, has a tapered step e, a cylindrical part f and a bevelled corner g. The acid-resisting substance is applied to the whole periphery and then removed from parts f and g. After chromium plating as described above, transverse grooves h are formed in the ring surface.
