Abstract

725,334. Gas burners. RONSON ART METAL WORKS, Inc. March 4, 1953 [March 26, 1952], No. 5998/53. Classes 75 (1) and 75 (3). A gas burner incorporating a valve for controlling the flow of gas to the burner for providing alternative types of flame formation suitable e.g. for lighting respectively cigarettes or pipes comprises an element in the gas outlet movably mounted to assume different positions when the burner is upright and inverted so as to provide gas outlet passages of different total cross-sectional areas. As shown, applied to a cigarette or pipe lighter utilizing liquefied gas fuel, the outlet 20 of the burner post 19 has a stem 16 slidable therein with clearance to provide an annular passage for the major part of the low velociity gas feed to the burner when upright to produce a short wide flame 18 as indicated. The central bore 21 of the stem is restricted at its end 22 and communicates through a transverse slot 23 at its inner end with the chamber beneath the post 19. A conical flanged portion 24 of the stem co-operates under the action of gravity in the inverted position, with a shoulder 26 on the interior of post 19 to shut off the gas supply to the annular passage, either substantially as to leave passage of gas for annular pilot-like flame or completely by means of an intermediate rubber washer (Fig. 4 not shown), while leaving open the restricted passage 21, 22 though which gas flows with greater velocity to produce an elongated flame. The gas feed to the chamber beneath the post 19 is through an orifice 33 normally closed by a rubber disc 36 on the end of stem 16 held down e.g. by a spring-restored finger piece when the lighter is not in use and raised from its seating by the. pressure of gas when released. Specification 291,695, [Class 75 (1)], is referred to.
