Abstract

683,734. Friction lighters. RONSON ART METAL WORKS, Inc. Dec. 29, 1950 [Dec. 30, 1949; Jan. 4, 1950], No. 31572/50. Class 75(iii) In a gas fueled lighter having a burner mounted in, and a cap member mounted on, the top wall of a fuel chamber casing, the cap being movable between positions wherein it either overlies or exposes the burner mouth, a fuel valve mounted in the burner mouth is movable between an inner closed position in which it is held by the cap member in the burner overlying position and an outer open position to which it is moved as the cap member is moved to the burner exposing position, the cap member being spring urged towards the burner overlying position to close the valve. The valve 15 is normally held in the closed position by a cap 6 under the action of a spring 11 pressing on a plunger 10a beneath a finger piece 8. Depression of the finger piece 8 raises cap 6 and the valve 15 is then lifted by the pressure of the gas within the fuel chamber 2. The gas passes from the chamber 2 to the burner mouth through a porous metal or ceramic plug 25, through passages formed between a plug 23 and a bore 22 of an annular member 21 and the lower face of a member 18, and through passages 19 and 5. Since the flame height at the burner mouth fluctuates with temperature, the pressure of the gas passing to the burner mouth is controlled by making the plug 23 of a synthetic nylon-type material having a coefficient of expansion about ten times greater than the brass or similar material of the valve body 3 and member 21 so that, as the lighter heats up, the area of the gas passage between the end of member 23 and the face of member 18 is altered. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3 a spring loaded ball 115 prevents valve 122 opening upon slight movement of the cap 106.
