Vessels are fed to a machine by a conveyer on the conveying track of which is a rotary spacer, the entry of each vessel into the spacer being regulated by a confining device adapted also for dividing the vessels into spaced groups. As shown, a supply of bottles 12 is fed by an endless band 13 between guides 32. The static pressure of the bottles is first relieved by the loop A in the guides which causes the bottles to pass off the band and then be pushed back on again by the following bottles. The confining finger 24 is moved periodically into the path of the bottles as they ride sideways along a wedge 26 by a lever 22 having a follower roller 23 spring-urged into contact with a cam-wheel 20 fixed to the spacer wheel 14. The bottles are thus released in synchronism with the recesses 15 in the wheel 14 so as to avoid jamming. A second cam wheel 17 is geared to the spacing wheel and has a cam 19 which, after, say, twenty bottles have passed through the spacing wheel, moves aside a follower roller 29 on a lever 31, the remote end of which rides on to a projection 32 on an extension 28 of the finger 24 so forcing finger 24 into bottle confining position until cam 19 has passed roller 29, whereupon lever 31 is returned by a spring 30.
