723,135. Washing and drying machines. DODGE, C. B. March 5, 1952 [March 9, 1951], No. 5719/52. Class 138 (2). [Also in Group XIII] A washing and drying machine has a perforated drum 1 rotatable within an air-tight casing 13 provided with a pressure relief valve 38 and supplied with hot water through solenoid operated valve 39, the casing being evacuated by a pump 34 with resilient vanes 41. Clothes are placed in the drum with detergent or soap and the drum is closed by cover 18. Drain valve 36 is closed, the control mechanism is started and valve 39 opens to admit hot water the depth of which is controlled by a float 73 in pipe 72 operating a switch 74, and the drum is agitated. Valve 36 is opened and the dirty water drained by pump 34, the valve 36 being then closed and rinse water admitted through valve 39, this rinsing step being repeated as often as desired by suitable arrangement of cams in the controller. Hot air is then admitted to commence the drying process.
