Abstract
722,138. Grabs for handling material. PRIESTMAN BROS., Ltd. June 30, 1953 [June 30, 1952], No. 16439/52. Class 78 (4). The closing rope of a wide opening grab comprising buckets 1, 2 integral with pivoted arms 3, 4 passes from a pulley 20 on a transverse axle 21 in one arm 3 to a pulley 23 carried by a frame 24 mounted for movement about horizontal trunnions 26 in the other arm 4. From the pulley 23 the closing cable may pass to anchorage on the arm 3, or as in the construction illustrated, may pass over a further pulley on the shaft 21 and around a guide 19 on the arm 4 to an anchorage at 18. The closing cable is guided from the grab head to the first pulley 20 by a pulley 14 on the arm 3. The frame 24 carrying the pulley 23 may be free to align itself to the closing cable but is preferably positively moved to maintain substantial alignment with the cable by a link 31 pivoted to a lug 32 on the frame 24 and to a lug 34 carried by one of a pair of opening links 6, 7 pivoted together at 10 and to the arms 3, 4 at 8, 9. The opening links 6, 7 are raised to open the grab by an opening rope 13 which passes to an anchorage 12 around a pulley 11 carried by the axle 10 joining the links 6, 7. The Specification provides guidance in proportioning the linkages 34, 31, 32 moving the frame 24.
