Abstract

Furane resin syrups are produced by polymerizing and/or condensing furfuryl alcohol, with or without an aldehyde such as furfuraldehyde or formaldehyde, in the presence of an acid catalyst and a small proportion, e.g. from 0.1 to 1.5 per cent, of urea, thiourea or their monoalkyl or symmetrical dialkyl derivatives wherein the amount of urea compound is appreciably greater than one gram molecule per gram equivalent of acid. The alkyl urea derivatives may be the methyl, ethyl and propyl compounds and the acid catalyst may be 10 per cent aqueous hydrochloric acid which is neutralized after the reaction with sodium or ammonium hydroxide. The polymerization may be carried out in solution in water, followed by further refluxing and subsequent removal of water by distillation under reduced pressure. The liquid resins may be compounded with acid resistant fillers, e.g. sand, pulverulent quartz, silica flour, barytes and brick dust and hardening accelerators, such as paratoluene sulphonic acid, ammonium paratoluene sulphonate, benzene sulphochloride, pyridine sulphanilate and ammonium ethyl phosphate, to form flooring compositions.
