Abstract
721,769. Forging-machines. BRAATZ, W. Feb. 28, 1952, No. 5287/52. Class 83 (4). In a rotary swaging machine in which radially disposed rams are engaged by a ring of rollers the heads of the rams have sinusoidal bearing faces for smooth engagement. A machine for swaging tubular work comprises a rotary head 4 carrying rams 7 in radially disposed guides 6. Rollers 3 in a race 2 rotating within the machine housing 1 engage sinusoidal heads 8 of the rams, the initial engagement being tangential. The rams are held apart by strong springs 10 engaging projections 9 the degree of opening being limited by adjustable stops 11. The work engaging dies 7<SP>1</SP> on the inner end of the rams have flared exit and entry faces 16, Fig. 2, for the work 12 and are radially adjustable relative to the rams by wedges 13 moved by screws 15. A mandrel 17 which may be square in section according to the required shape for the inside of the work is fixedly supported between the dies by a rod 18 over which the work 12 is fed. In modifications the head 4 may be stationary and the race 2 or outer ring 1 rotatably driven. The mandrel may be fed forward with the work where a shoulder is to be forged, or may be shaped to form internal helical formations. In a further modification a rotatable ram holder 33, Fig. 6, carries rams 35 with widened heads 40 arranged so that at least one of the rolls 38, 39 is always in engagement. The head has a hardened insert 43 and springs 44 hold the rams in engagement with the rolls. The dies 45 are held to the rams by clamps 47 and are set in position by packing 49. The apparatus may be used for forging box spanners, tubes with internal splining, conical tubes, or tubes with throats or may be used for attaching sleeves or terminal elements to cables or rods.
