Abstract

720,542. Screw fans. HOTPOINT ELECTRIC APPLIANCE CO., Ltd. Aug. 8, 1952 [Aug. 28, 1951], No. 20266/51. Class 110 (1). In an electrically driven fan of the kind which is used in an aperture of a wall or window, the aperture can be closed by pivoted blades which are moved from the closed to the open position and vice versa in response to, or simultaneously with, the operation of the switch of the driving motor. The frame 1 of the fan is mounted, by means of rings 3, 4 and gaskets 5, within a hole in a window or other panel 2 and has a rectangular exhaust opening 10 which is closable by means of pivoted louvres 11 which overlap in the closed position. The louvres have arms 12 which are interconnected by links 13 and 13<SP>1</SP> for simultaneous actuation. Two of the louvres carry cranks 14 and 15 respectively, which are connected by a link 16 to form a toggle. A tension spring (not shown) is connected between the spindle 27 and the common pivot 17 of crank 15 and link 16. In the closed position of the louvres and in the open position shown, the toggle is over the dead centre position, so that in each case the spring holds the louvres in position. An abutment 141 limits the movement of the toggle. The fan is controlled by cords 19, 21 which are wound in opposite directions around a pair of pulleys mounted on the shaft of the rotary switch 25 of the driving motor 6. Thus, pulling cord 21 opens the louvres and switches on the motor, while pulling cord 19 closes the louvres and switches off the motor. The opening of the louvres may be effected by an electromagnetic relay, the winding of which is connected in series or in parallel with the motor 6 so as to be energized when the motor is switched on. The louvres may be replaced by an iris diaphragm comprising arcuate blades attached to relatively rotatable concentric rings. One of the rings is attached to the frame 1, preferably between the fan blades 9 and the spider 7 which supports the motor 6, so that the blades bear in the closed position on the casing of the motor In addition there may be fixed blades across the opening 10 to deflect rain.
