Abstract

720,365. Axle-bearing guiding arrangements. METALASTIK, Ltd. Sept. 3, 1952 [June 20, 1951], No. 14690/51. Class 103 (6). An axle-box suspension mounting comprises resilient elements 15 mounted fore and aft of the axle box 12 and supporting it from a chassis frame 10 or other body-supporting structure of the vehicle, each element 15 including chevronshaped rubber blocks 16 surface bonded to correspondingly shaped leaves 17a, 17b, 17c. The arrangement is such that transverse loads are resisted by the rubber blocks 16 mainly in compression whereas substantially vertical loads will be resisted by the rubber blocks mainly in shear. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, each end leaf 17a is secured to a bogie sole plate 10 by means of a suitably shaped bracket 18. Each inner leaf 17c is secured by bolts 26 to a member 19. The members 19 are joined at their upper ends by a yoke 29 having a centrally disposed boss 31 the bore 32 of which is screw threaded to receive a bolt 33 which bears against a surface 34 on the top of the axle box 12. Vertical flanges 14 on the sides of the axle box engage grooves formed in the members 19 so that adjustment of the height of the axle box in relation to the resilient elements 15 may be effected by adjustment of the bolt 33. The aperture 11 in the sole plate 10 is bridged by a rigid tie rod 38. The resilient mounting elements 15 are so constructed that the rubber blocks 16 are preloaded in compression and shear when under tare load. In a modification, each of the mountings arranged fore and aft of an axie box 12, Figs. 6 and 7, comprises a set of two opposed but coupled chevron-shaped resilient mounting elements 15. A pair of triangular-shaped members 40, Fig. 9, fills the space between each pair of elements 15. The outermost and innermost rubber blocks 16 are bonded to surfaces 47 of blocks 48, Fig. 8. The innermost blocks 48 directly engage the axle box 12 and are located transversely by spaced flanges 54 and adjustable vertically by means of bolts 57 located in eyes 56 on the axle-box 12. The outermost blocks 52 engage brackets 51 bolted to the sole plate 10. The fore and aft resilient mountings are bridged by a tie rod 42 having enlarged apertured ends 43, through which pass bolts 44. The latter also pass through holes 41 in the blocks 40, and through straps 45, the rigid assembly being completed by nuts 46. In any suspension in accordance with the invention a rubber pad which is remote from the axle box may be made of less height and of greater width than the rubber pads nearer the axle box and offset upwardly in relation to these pads in order to increase resistance to canting of the metal leaves. Specification 648,516 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
