Abstract

719,498. Moulding ceramic material. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. June 6, 1952 [June 9, 1951], No. 14318/52. Class 87(2) Ceramic articles are made by mixing the starting material with a liquid to form a mixture from which the whole or part of the liquid is then removed by a filter press the inner space of which constitutes a shaping die. Initially, the parts are in the position shown. After the mould 6 and sump 12 have been exhausted through suction pipe 13 valve 7 is opened to allow material to flow into the mould under pressure of the piston 4. Valve 7 is then closed, the suction is relieved and the piston 16 lowered until it is almost flush with the inner walls of the mould. The volume swept out by the piston 16 is equal to the volume of liquid expressed from the material through the filter cloth 8 and drainage holes 11. This liquid flows from the sump 12 to a storage vessel to be re-used in subsequent moulding operations. After the moulding operation the piston 16 and die-part 15 are raised enabling the article to be removed from the open die. Alternatively, vacuum may be created beneath the piston 16 and the article raised with the die-part 15. Admission of compressed air to the space 20 by means not shown enables the moulding to be released. The moulded material may be pure titanium dioxide, or a mixture containing the oxides of barium or magnesium. The liquid used may be water, alcohol, acetone or ether.
