Class 38(4) To allow the use of a generator of lower rating in a starting system for a large internal combustion engine having a starting motor which is supplied by a generator driven by another prime-mover, an automatic switching system, responsive to current, or voltage obtaining in the starting motor circuit, connects a normally inactive auxiliary battery, of relatively small capacity, in parallel with the generator to meet the peak power demand during the initial cranking period. The switching system subsequently disconnects the battery when the starting circuit current has fallen, or the circuit voltage has risen, to a predetermined value indicative that the power requirements are within the capabilities of the generator. The generator may charge the battery when not required for engine starting.
