On the way from the bobbin or beam to the knitting point, the warp threads are taken over a tension bar, in the support for which there are two resilient connections of different strengths and natural frequencies, the stronger support yielding substantially only under an overall increase in the mean tension of the threads and the weaker connection absorbing cyclical fluctuation in thread tension during the knitting of a course. A flexible plate 3, or flexible supporting arms 19 and rod 18, constitute the weaker connection, whilst the stronger connection is provided by springs 9, 23, or 45, against the action of which a shaft 6 or 20 bearing the plate or arms can be rotated. Sufficient rotation of the shaft may close electrical contacts to energize a motor 70, Fig. 1, which traverses along its lead-screw 71 a ring 13 transmitting the drive from a cone 14 to a beam-driving cone 15, the initial speed of cone 15 being manually adjustable by traversing a second driving ring 17, or to energize an electromagnet to engage a clutch 30, 32 in the beam drive, Fig. 2, or may act through linkwork to release a brake or to release a brake and engage a clutch. The contacts may be snapped into and out of contact by an arrangement comprising a bell crank 40, pivoted at 41, moved by stops 43 on a rod 44, linked to the shaft 20, and connected by a tension spring 42 to a pivoted arm 36 bearing one contact 35.
