Abstract

717,832. Two-stroke engines; cooling cylinders; pumps; lubricating. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. April 9, 1951 [April 22, 1950]. No. 8137/51. Class 7(2) A two - stroke engine with a plurality of pistons and cylinders has a one-piece cylinder block 11, Fig. 5, integrally incorporating exhaust passages 148 and an air inlet manifold 114, Fig. 2, embodying, between transverse parallel inclined walls 107, 111 which are intersected by the cylinder walls 29, air inlet passages 117 leading to inlet ports 138 disposed in the cylinder walls generally opposite exhaust ports 155 leading to the exhaust passages 148, upper and lower end walls of the inlet ports 138 being shaped to direct the incoming air away from the pistons and the inlet passages 117 being generally so shaped as to guide the incoming air in the overall directions determined by the configuration of the inlet port walls. As shown applied to a loop-scavenged compression-ignition engine fuel injectors 39, Fig. 1, are operated through rockers (not shown) by push rods 97 actuated by a camshaft 54 driven from an extension 52 of the crankshaft through gears enclosed by a casing 53 also containing a crankshaft-driven lubricating pump. Cooling cylinders. A combined radiator fan 16 and cooling-water pump 63 are beltdriven from the crankshaft extension 52 The pump supplies cooling liquid from the radiator (not shown) to the adjacent one of a number of cavities 73, Figs. 2 and 5, and also to a distribution duct 74, extending axially throughout the block 11, whence liquid flows to the other cavities 73 as via cross-ducts 71, all the liquid finally passing through bores 69 to cylinder-head jackets 67, Fig. 1, and thence back to the radiator. Engine construction. Columns 84, 86, Fig. 2, staggered in relation to the cylinders and joined by webs 89 passing between the cylinders, merge into upper crankshaft bearing journals 87, and receive cylinder head securing bolts 83 and bolts (not shown) securing the lower crankshaft bearing journals. Pumps. A Root's blower 129, Fig. 2, supplying the manifold 114 is driven by the crankshaft via gears (not shown) in a housing 130, Fig. 1. Lubricating. The crankcase is supplied with oil via an inlet 102 into a rocker cover 13, the oil passing over the cylinder head and down through tubes 92 surrounding the push rods 97. An oil cooler 104, Fig. 2, secured to the side of the block 11 supplies via passages 106 oil to the cam shaft 54 and to the rocker mechanism
