Abstract

717,620. Heat treating. ELECTRIC FURNACE CO., Ltd. May 1, 1953 [May 1, 1952], No. 11037/52. Class 72 [Also in Group XI] A cylindrical surface 12, Fig. 6. of a metal workpiece is heated by a single turn inductor 15 which, at any instant, heats a relatively small circumferential area, and relative rotary movement between the workpiece and inductor about the axis of the cylindrical surface effects the heating of the whole surface or a circumferential band thereof. A quench device 18 comprising a number of outlet orifices is secured to the inductor, . and quenching fluid is continuously supplied to the area heated. The workpiece 10 is supported on a rotatable turntable 11, Fig. 1, and the inductor is carried by an arm 14 which may move vertically on a track 21, in which case a helical band of the workpiece surface is treated. ' In Fig. 8 the external cylindrical surfaces of crankshaft journals 34 are hardened by an inductor 40 and an associated quench device 41. the crankshaft being rotated :about the axis of the journals. The inductor may be enclosed within suitable laminated material.
