Abstract

310,347. Cammell, Laird, & Co., Ltd., Allan, J. M., and Hague, A. P. Jan. 23, 1928. Resistance furnaces.-Apparatus for heating the journal end of a railway axle comprises an annular electric furnace a heated by a ring of electrodes forming an annular heating zone d. An adjustable closure e is provided for one end of the furnace. The axle is carried on a trolley j mounted on rails h on a turntable g and provided with motordriven rollers m for rotating the axle. The trolley is traversed to bring the journal k<1> into the furnace, and, after sufficient heating has been effected, the axle is withdrawn and the turntable moved to enable the journal to be inserted into water spraying apparatus p.
