Abstract

717,242. Interference microscopes. SINGER INSTRUMENT CO., Ltd. Dec. 10, 1952 [Sept. 11, 1951], No. 21335/51. Class 97(1) [Also in Group XIX] Apparatus for measuring the thickness of particles, comprises a microscope, a holder and slide adapted to receive the particles, and a sphere or lens having a spherical surface of known diameter in contact with the slide, means for providing relative sideways movement between the lens and the slide, and an eye-piece graticule in the microscope for indicating or measuring the distance between the point of contact of lens and slide, and the point of contact of lens and particle so that the thickness of the particles can be calculated. The apparatus may replace the front lens of the substage condenser of a microscope and comprises a spherical or partly spherical lens 6 held between an outer cap 4 and an inner cap 5 carried by a metal sleeve 2 which is internally threaded for attachment to the microscope. In a modification shown in Fig. 2 the spherical lens is replaced by a lens having one spherical surface for contacting the slide and a plane surface. In use particles are placed on a microscope slide on one side and contact is first made between the lens 6 and the slide clear of the particles. The point of contact of lens and slide is brought to focus in the field of view, which appears as the centre of a Newton's Rings interference pattern. The slide is then traversed from left to right and particles enter the field and are seen to meet the lens at varying distances from the point of contact of lens and slide. These distances are proportional to the square roots of the thickness of the particles. Lenses of different spherical curvature may be selectively accommodated by the inner and outer caps 4 and 5 to accommodate particles of various sizes. If the lens 6 becomes scored over its working area it may be rotated to bring a fresh portion of its surface into contact with the slide. By arranging that the cap 3 is slidable in the sleeve 2 excessive pressure on the slide is avoided and contact is preserved while the slide is traversed.
