Class 122(5) A shaft packing ring 10 is grooved on its working face to form one or more first lips 11, 12 having a face at one side thereof radial to the axis of the ring and a tapered face at the other side and two or more second lips 13, 14, 15 having corresponding faces conversely orientated to those of the first lip or lips, all the lips having an intermediate land parallel to the axis of the ring.
