Abstract

715,307. Piling fibrous slivers &c. CELANESE CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Dec. 22, 1952 [Dec. 21, 1951], No. 32495/52. Class 120(3) [Also in Group XVII]. Apparatus for piling continuous filaments or fibres of textile material arranged in a single strand or rope, i.e. in the form of a tow, comprises traverse means for directing a tow into a carton, supporting means adapted to carry a pair of cartons, and means for shifting the supporting means to present the cartons carried thereby alternately to the traverse means. A carton 82 is placed in each of the carton holders 35, 36 which are supported on a carriage 32 movable on tracks 31. In Fig. 1, carriage 32 is positioned so that holder 35 is beneath a traverse mechanism 27 which includes feed rolls 97, 98 of which 97 is driven by a motor 101, Fig. 3. The tow 28 is folded or pleated, Fig. 9, by the combined action of two piston rods 121, 118 working at right angles to each other and producing a lateral and longitudinal movement of a plate 104 of a feed assembly 103. A sufficient length of tow is fed to fill the carton and also a major portion of a filler sleeve 67 which rests just inside the holder 35, after which the carriage 32 moves under the action of a piston rod 75 so that the filler sleeve 67 and carton holder 35 are beneath a platen 24. The tow is then severed by a cutter assembly and the traverse 27 continues to feed the tow which is now received by the carton in holder 36. After. placing a cap 123 over the mass of folded tow in the filler sleeve 67, a' hydraulic cylinder 22 is operated and platen 24 compresses the package. Jacks 77 are then operated and a pivoted platform 59 is slightly raised, thus causing rods 64 to lift the filler sleeve out of the carton holder 35. Straps 125 may then be inserted through grooves 26 in the lower face of the platen 24 and after being guided completely round the carton and cap the straps are joined by clips to hold the package compressed. Carton holder walls 42, 43 and 53, Fig. 7, which are hinged are then unlatched, the platen 24 is raised, thereby allowing jacks 77 to tip the platform 59, and the package slides out of the holder 35 ready to receive a cover 128. After release of the jacks 77, the filler sleeve 67 is held clear of the holder 35 by means of a latch mechanism, an empty carton is placed in the holder 35, which is closed and latched. The filler sleeve 67 is then allowed to drop into the carton 82' which is ready to receive the next load of tow. When the carton in holder 36 and' filler sleeve 68 are charged the carriage 32 is moved back to the position shown in Fig. 1 and the cycle of operations is repeated..
