[Also in Division B3] In a machine A for tying up coils of metal wire, or the like, a tie bar b, from the bottom of a vibrating pile of bars in a magazine m, is fed by a pusher p between pairs of guide rollers g, g and 1, 1 through an opening in one 3, of a pair of guide plates 2, 3 between which a coil to be tied is compressed, and is guided upwardly along one side of the coil by a deflector 4, the remainder of the tie being wrapped around the coil by laterally and pivotally movable jaws 5, 6 respectively and a pair of deflectors 13 bending back the ends of the tie bar b as they are tensioned by the jaws and before they are finally introduced into a pair of recesses 17 in a rotatable twisting head 10. As the latter is rotated by a jack 11 and gearing 12 the twisting of the united ends of the tie bar progresses from the face of the coil inwards in the direction of the free ends of the tie, the ends of the jaws 5, 6 being provided respectively with a taper and recess 15 and a corresponding projection 16, which co-operate to trap, but not grip, the tie bar b. In a modification, Figs. 4-8, not shown, the machine (A<SP>1</SP>) is mounted upon a carriage (20) adjustably mounted upon a main carriage (21) which is reciprocable, in a direction parallel to that of a conveyer in synchronism with the continuous forward movement of a series of spaced coils suspended from the conveyer to effect a pair of ties on each coil while the conveyer continues to move, the carriage also carrying a pair of tie-rod magazines B. At the beginning of a forward reciprocation of the carriage 21, a coil (C<SP>1</SP>) is located between the machine guide plates (2<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>1</SP>) which are moved towards each other to compress the coil (C<SP>1</SP>) therebetween, the carriage (20) being initially adjusted to accurately align the machine with the particular moving coil (C<SP>1</SP>). When the tying is completed the plates 2<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>1</SP> open and the carriage (20) shifts the machine laterally away from the coil (C<SP>1</SP>). In the embodiment of Figs. 1, 3, a second tying head 10<SP>1</SP> driven by the same mechanism 11, can effect, simultaneously, a second tie diametrically opposed to the first tie, a second tie bar magazine also being supplied.
