Class 146(3) In a ball-point pen for use with either viscous or ordinary writing inks, the reservoir is constructed such that at least a part thereof is permeable to air and non- permeable to the ink used therein. The reservoir may be of non-capillary dimensions. As shown in Fig. 1, a tip member 1, having a housing 2 for a writing ball 3 and ink passages 5, 6 therein, fits into a holder 10 which serves also as an ink reservoir. A closure plug 14 for the holder is recessed at 17 and has a membrane 15 of material such as latex, which is permeable to air but not to ink, fitted across the inner and cylindrical surfaces thereof. The plug has a hole 18 therein so that air can pass into the recess 17 and through the face 16 of the membrane into the reservoir. To prevent the ink drying on the membrane the latter is smooth, or liquid-repelling, e.g. of cauterized gypsum. In a modification, the reservoir is separate from the holder and comprises a cylindrical element made entirely of latex: it is closed at one end, and open at the other end which is fitted over a neck-like extension of the tip member. In Fig. 4 the latex reservoir 30 comprises a separate refill member which is entirely closed and charged with ink 33; it is pierced for use in the holder 34 by a hollow needle-like extension 39 of the tip member 36.
