Abstract

714,911. Tubular heat-exchangers; surface condensers. HOLMES & CO., Ltd., W. C. March 5, 1951 [March 4, 1950], No. 5510/50. Class 64(3) A gas cooler comprises a shell 10 having an inlet and an outlet for the gas to flow through the shell and transversely and at uniform velocity over vertical tubes 13 disposed within the shell and extending between headers, the upper header having an open top. In the form shown coolant water is directed serially through groups of tubes from an inlet 17 to an outlet 18. The upper headers e.g. 14, 16 through which the coolant passes in flowing from one tube group to the next each have an open top whilst the lower headers 15 are closed chambers in the usual manner. Hot gas such as crude coal gas flowing over the tube groups from an inlet 11 to an outlet 12 is given a uniform velocity within the shell by the provision of perforated plates 19 disposed adjacent and if desired intermediate the gas inlet and outlet. Condensates from the cooled gas are run off through openings 20. The inlet and outlet for the gas may be positioned as indicated by the references 11a, 12a, or they may be disposed both at one end of the shell. Means such as are described in Specification 619,032 may be provided for spraying cleaning fluid on to the outer surfaces of the tubes.
