Abstract

674,652. Tubular heat-exchangers. HOWARD IRON WORKS, Inc. Jan. 26, 1950, No. 2086/50. Class 64(iii). A tubular heat-exchanger comprises a bundle of tubes 32 extending between tube plates 33, 34 which are supported by retaining rings 15, 16 respectively and each of which carries a header block 35 or 36, tie members (e.g. rods 21) extending between the retaining rings and being disposed in protective relation about the tube bundle and means being applied to the outer faces of the retaining rings for fastening the header blocks 35, 36 to the tube plates. In the form shown the header 33, 35 is fixed, the ring 15 being bolted to the end flange 11 of a casing 10 surrounding the tubes while the ring 16 is slidable in the casing, allowing the header 34, 36 to accommodate thermal expansion of the tubes 32. Baffles 28 provided with apertures 29 guide one fluid entering at 13 in a zig-zag path over the tubes to the outlet 14, the baffles being supported by the rods 21 and spaced thereon by sleeves 30. The other fluid enters through the nozzle 43 in the header block 35 and after passing through the tubes is discharged through the nozzle 44. The rods 21 are each fixed at one end to the ring 15, the other end being adjustable longitudinally and being freely mounted in a socket 24 in the ring 16. The tubes 32 and the tube plates 33, 34 may be made from a non-metallic material such as carbon.
