Abstract

714,890. Removing and inserting bushes. BRITISH TRANSPORT COMMISSION. March 25, 1953 [July 14, 1952], No. 17762/52. Class 61 A 'tool for inserting and removing bushes such as those connecting the links of an escalator step chain comprises a stem 24 adapted to pass through the bush 28 and carrying a bush engaging abutment nut 26, and an annular abutment member 19 movable along the stem towards the nut 26 by hydraulic means. As shown a cylinder 10 connected to a liquid supply has an end wall 13. provided with a screw threaded hole to receive the screwed end 25 of the stem 24, and two arcuate slots 15 to receive the two longitudinally extending legs 18 of a piston 16. The annular abutment member 19 is bolted to the legs 18. In operation a dummy bush 30 is fitted on the stem 24 which is then passed through the bush 28 and screwed into the end wall of the cylinder thus bringing the member 19 into engagement with the chain side plate 29. The piston 16 on being moved to the left causes the bush 28 to be pushed from the chain through the abutment member 19. The stroke of the tool is equal to the length of the bush 28 'the maximum spacing between the abutments 19 and 26 being twice the length of the bush. In a modification the stem is permanently secured to the end wall of the cylinder. In another modification the legs 18 of the piston are replaced by rods or pillars which pass through holes in the end wall of the cylinder.
