Abstract

Class 38(5) [Also in Group XI] Steam from the spout or lid of a kettle supported on a cooker impinges on a metal casing 24 of a thermostatic switch in series with an immersion heater in the kettle so as to control current supply to the kettle. A bimetallic strip 20 is supported at one end by an insulating block 19 on a bent metal arm 16 pivoted or hinged at 15 on a plate 14 on a terminal block 11. A current supply lead 18 is connected to an adjustable contact pin 17 on the block 11 and current passes through the arm 16 of the thermal switch which is connected by a wire 10 to be in series with the immersion heater of the kettle. The centre of gravity of the arm 16 is such that the lower, end of the arm normally contacts the contact 17. The free end of the bimetallic strip 20 rests against an adjustable pin 21, so that on impingement of steam on the heat-conductive casing 24 of the thermostat the strip bends to break the contacts 17. The current-conveying bar 16 carries a magnetizing block 23 adjacent but not in contact with a permanent magnet 22 on the support 11. A pilot lamp in parallel with a resistance may be in series with the kettle and thermostatic switch. A press button may be arranged to short-circuit the thermostat.
