Tool feed control means for a machine tool such as a planing-machine comprises a doubleacting fluid motor M for feeding the tool, switch means FLS, RLS operated by the motor at the limits of its movements, and electromagnetic circuits controlling the valve CV admitting fluid to the motor, the circuits being controlled by further switch means R operated at one end of the stroke of tool or work. The motor piston carries a rack la which oscillates a gear 2 to rotate the tool feed-screw 10 through a one-way clutch 3 and a reversing clutch FR. In operation, a hand switch S is closed to energize a solenoid FS and cause the valve CV to move and supply fluid to the motor M. The piston 1 moves to the left to advance the feed-shaft 10 until the adjustable switch FLS is closed and the valve CV returns to its neutral position. At the end of a cutting stroke, the switch R is operated by dogs on the machine table, the valve is moved to its left-hand position, and the motor M returns to its initial position, the clutch 3 running idly. The tool may be returned rapidly by a motor driving through an overrunning clutch 33.
