Abstract

A basic unfired refractory article comprises magnesia and from 3 to 15 per cent. iron powder which passes 28 Tyler mesh. Chromite, alone or in addition to the magnesia, may be present, but when chromite alone is used it is of the type to contain magnesia as an impurity. A binder, e.g. sulphuric acid or magnesium sulphate may also be present, and the article may be cured by treatment with carbon dioxide as in Specification, 682,642. The sulphuric acid is added to the magnesia and/or chromite before the iron powder. Specification 370,013 also is referred to.
