Abstract

In the production of aerated calcium silicate hydrate products of low apparent density and low wetting and drying movements, there is employed a mixture of finely-divided calcareous and siliceous materials and a lightweight aggregate of apparent density not greater than 80 lb. per cubic foot capable of contributing to the strength of the product by its own strength or by its combination with the calcareous material, the siliceous material, or both, under the curing in steam at a pressure of 100-200 lbs. per sq. in. undertaken as a final step in making the products. The lightweight aggregate is exemplified by pumice, clinker, expanded perlite, expanded shale, expanded clay, foamed slag. A foamed aqueous solution of foaming agent may be injected into an aqueous slurry of the calcareous and siliceous materials and the aggregate, or the aggregate may be added to a slurry of the calcareous and siliceous materials already injected with such foam, and the mixture cast in moulds, or the aggregate, preferably damped, may be placed in moulds and a slurry of the calcareous and siliceous materials already injected with such foam may then be poured in. During preparation of the mixture, the temperature may be elevated to not more than 75 DEG C. Pre-setting is allowed to take place; to accelerate pre-setting the temperature may be gradually increased to 90 DEG C., a humid atmosphere being maintained. Curing may be for 14 hours at 140 lb. per sq. in. in steam pressure. Specification 492,728, [Group IV], is referred to.
