Abstract

A fully hydrated gypsum mould for casting aluminium, magnesium, &c. has uniformly distributed air bubbles under 0.02in. in diameter, permeability over 20 on the American Foundrymen Society scale and a compressive strength over 50 p.s.i. It is made by slowly mixing gypsum and an aqueous solution of a sulphonated hydrocarbon foaming agent while stirring, agitating while introducing air, further agitating to reduce the size of the air bubbles and pouring into a mould shaped to produce the mould desired. To 1 lb. of calcined gypsum may be added 0.85 lb. of a 0.4 per cent. solution of sodium alkyl naphthalene sulphonate. The first agitation may be effected by a perforated disc rotated at 2,000 r.p.m. and the total agitation should last about 60 seconds. 3 to 50 per cent. of a filler, e.g. talc, asbestos or silica, and up to 1 per cent. of an accelerator or retarder, e.g. terra alba, sodium sulphate, chloride or citrate or citric acid, may be added to the gypsum. After setting, the gypsum mould is extracted and dried at 180 DEG to 240 DEG F. Moulds so produced may be used for casting aluminium alloy blades for torque converters.
