Abstract

Class 100 (2) A power-driven colour-transfer marking press comprises a hollow column, a lower platen and a hollow superstructure extending forwardly of the column, an upper platen assembly reciprocably mounted in the superstructure and incorporating foil-supporting, foil-feeding and foil take-up mechanism, and drive transmission means in the column and superstructure for reciprocating the upper platen assembly and actuating the foilfeeding mechanism. As shown the press comprises the column 1, the superstructure with a removable head 2, and a base platform 3. The lower platen 13 is mounted on a knee assembly 12 having locking devices 14 for securing the assembly to the press or removing it therefrom, in the latter case the platform 3 supporting the work. The knee assembly is adjustable vertically on the press, fine adjustments being made by a hand wheel 15 and the platen 13 is slidable toward or away from the column by a control wheel 18 and is adjustable laterally by a knob 20. The upper platen assembly 4 carrying dies 9 is mounted on a reciprocable ram 5. Also mounted on the ram is an electrically operated heating box 44 and the foil feeding and supporting rollers 7, 8, the feed rollers being actuated automatically pursuant to movement of the ram. The ram is reciprocated by an electric motor (not shown), as infinitely variable speed gear 22, a clutch 23, an epicyclic gear (not shown), a chain 26, a crankshaft 27, a link 29, a rocker lever 30, a link 31, and a second rocker lever 32, one end of which is pivotally connected to a block slidably received within an opening in the ram 5. The clutch is operated by a clutch lever 25 which is controlled through a flexible cable by a pedal (not shown) and carries a striker 36 co-operating with a pin 37 carried by a wheel on the crank-shaft so that the clutch is disengaged after one cycle, the striker being controlled by a member (not shown) so that it can be moved out of the path of the pin 37 and the clutch is then under control of the pedal. The outer element of the epicyclic gear is coupled to a hand wheel 39 with which is associated a locking collar 40, the collar being tightened when the ram is motor driven and the collar being released when the ram is hand driven by means of the wheel 39, a uni-directional mechanism preventing the rotation of the motor. Mounted on the shaft of the rocker lever 30 is an oscillatory arm (not shown) which drives through a link 10 the foil feeding rollers, the connection between the arm and the link 10 being adjustable to vary the feed of the foil. A spindle 33 on which the rocker lever 32 is freely mounted has eccentric end portions and one of the end portions has an actuating member 34 by means of which the distance between the upper and lower platens can be adjusted so that the correct pressure can be exerted on the work during a marking operation.
