Abstract

[Class 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XXIV] A stock feeding device, more particularly for metal working machinery such as upsetting and heading machines comprises intermittent stock feed members driven from a pivoted lever coupled to a reciprocating driving member by locking means which may be released so that the driving member can be driven without moving the pivoted lever or the feed mechanism and means preventing such release during the feeding stroke. The stock is fed by feed rolls 5, the lower of which is intermittently rotated by means of a ratchet mechanism 7 of known type operated by a lever 20 pivoted at 41 and coupled to the ratchet mechanism by a link 55. The lever 20 is reciprocated from a crank-pin 9 through lever 11 and a swinging arm 12 which is pivoted on a pin 13. One part 18 of the lever 20 abuts one side of the arm 12 and when in driving position, a spring-pressed pin 16 slidably mounted in the lever 20, embraces the other side of the arm 12 so that the oscillation of the arm is transmitted to the lever. The pin 16 may however be withdrawn from the position in which it engages the arm 12 and no motion is then transmitted to the feed rolls. A shaft 25 freely mounted within the lever 20 has an arm 26 extending into a notch 27 in the pin 16 and to the outer end of the shaft is fixed an arm 28 which during the return or idle stroke of the mechanism may engage a tripping cam 30 in which case the arm 28 is operated to raise the pin to interrupt the drive. The cam 30 may be moved into a position to engage the arm 28 on the idle stroke of the lever 20 by means of a hand lever 59 operating through rod 58 and link 33, but the arm 28 itself prevents the cam 30 from moving into the operating position during the feed stroke. When the pin 16 is released for re-engagement, it will ride across the surface 60 of the arm 12 until the arm reaches a position for the beginning of a fresh feed stroke. The extent of the driving movement of the rolls 5 may be adjusted by means of the connection between the link 55 and lever 20 which comprises a screw 48 mounted in the lever and in screw-threaded engagement with a block 47 pivoted to the end of the link. A hand-wheel 54 serves to rotate the screw through gears 50 and 52.
