Abstract

1,256,713. Disc brakes. GIRLING Ltd. 10 April, 1969 [11 April, 1968; 30 Oct., 1968], Nos. 17716/68 and 51449/68. Heading F2E. A railway vehicle disc brake comprises a yoke 114, 134, a pair of opposed caliper levers 128 pivotally mounted on the yoke, a pair of brake shoes 126 one pivotally mounted at the inner end of each lever, an actuating motor 136 for separating the outer ends of the levers to move the shoes towards each other, whereby in use the shoes can be applied to opposite sides of a brake rotor comprising a disc or discs D mounted for rotation with a wheel W of the vehicle, and a suspension link H for each shoe, each link being pivotally connected at one end to its shoe 126 and at its other end to a rigid support structure and serving in use to resist pivotal movement of the shoe about its pivotal connection with the caliper lever, relative to the brake rotor. The rigid support structure 118 is fast with the yoke and resilient suspension means are provided for mounting the yoke on a railway vehicle frame 104 in a manner accommodating some misalignment between the vehicle frame and the brake rotor without any substantial corresponding reaction being transmitted back to the vehicle frame during braking. As shown, brackets 100, 102 secured to the frame 104 carry a mounting block 108 disposed between plates 106 and apertured for the reception of spherical rubber bushes 110, Fig. 3, through which extend bolts 112. Arms 118 to which the links H are attached are secured to the block. The actuator 136 incorporates a slack adjuster 138. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the yoke is supported for angular movement about an axis extending generally radially of the rotor by means of a pivot pin coupling the yoke to a mounting structure rigid with the frame 104, and a resilient force tending to maintain the yoke in a central angular position is provided by a pair of spring assemblies disposed on opposite sides of the pin and each acting between the yoke and mounting structure.
