Abstract

712,485. Packaging. CROWTHER, H. A. H. Oct. 11, 1951 [March 1, 1951], No. 5013/51. Class 94 (1) A method of producing a series of charged and sealed capsules with the aid of intermittently downwardly fed opposed lengths of thermoplastic web or strip material comprises forming each of successive capsules by first joining the opposed webs to form a sac, then charging the sac through the open top thereof and following displacement of the webs, sealing the sac to close the capsule, the said joining and sealing being effected by di-electric heating, the welding members being U-shaped electrodes across which the high frequency power is applied, the electrodes sealing the last formed sac as they form the sac of the next capsule along the webs. Opposed webs 6 of thermoplastic material are fed intermittently from rolls 25 between di-electric heating sealing jaws 11, 12 which seal the strips together along the two longitudinal edges and transversely to form a sac which is filled with a measured quantity of material from a tube 9 extending between the strips, the top closure of the filled sac forming the bottom closure of the succeeding sac. The chain package so formed is moved intermittently downwards by feed means comprising a reciprocated slide 30 to which is pivoted a member 32 arranged to swing in and grip the chain package on downward movement of the slide 30 and to swing away on the upward movement. The heatsealing means 11 is generally U-shaped to co-aperate with the heat-sealing means 12 which is slidably mounted in its carrier 18 and is spring-urged away therefrom, such movement being limited by stop nuts 23. The heat-sealing means 12 comprises, Figs. 6, 7, two side bars 15 to form longitudinal side seals 7, Fig. 15, of a length greater than that of the package, so that succeeding seals overlap longitudinally, but not extending to a transverse seal 4, which is formed by a cross bar 16. The bar 16 has an obtuse angled edge 41 to ensure that the seal is thinner along its centre line so that the packages may be easily. separated. Sealing elements 24 of the means 12 form a tear space 42 in the package. Multiple chain packages with side-by-side packages having tear bands between them may be formed. The tear bands may be formed in a separate operation and may be partially slit. Marginal slits may be formed in the capsules outside the seams. Discontinuous tear bands may be formed. The electrodes may impress indicia on the packages. Trapezoidal packages may be formed.
