Abstract

711,599. Lap-forming apparatus. AKT.- GES. J. J. RIETER & CIE. March 30,1951 [June 5, 1950], No. 7480/51. Class 120(1) During the formation of a sliver-lap by rolling slivers on a sleeve, the roll is pulled on to two rolling surfaces, the rotation axis of which are parallel to the axes of the sleeve, and the pulling force is steadily increased proportionately to the increasing diameter of the roll by using the displacement of the sleeve due to such increasing diameter to reduce the volume of a predetermined amount of gas in a closed conduit system. In the machine shown, lap A is delivered from calender rollers 3 and wound on a sleeve frictionally driven by lap rollers 4 carried by a rod 8 rotating in bearings on pressure heads 6 on the ends of pull rods 7. By depressing a pedal 14, a piston 12 in a cylinder 13 is moved to open pipes 15, 20, to the relieved piston portion so that air flows from a tank 19 into cylinders as at 11 and exerts on top of pistons 10 a pressure controlling the pull on the rods 7. Thus, as the rods and the pistons 10 are lifted by the increased lap diameter, the air above pistons 10 is displaced into the tank 19 and checked by a valve 21. On completion of the lap, pedal 14 is lifted to lower the piston 12 so that air above each piston 10 escapes through the pipe 15 and a vent 13<SP>1</SP>: air again flows from the tank 19 into the cylinder 13 and through pipes 16, 17, into the cylinders 11 below the pistons 10 causing rapid upward movement thereof to raise the lap for removal. When a fresh sleeve has been mounted, pedal 14 is depressed and piston 13 resumes operative position: air again flows into the upper parts of the cylinders 11, the pistons 10 of which rapidly descend, displacing the air on their underside through pipes 16, 17, and vents 24 which have a throttling screw 25 to control the sinking rate of the freshly inserted sleeve: as soon as each piston 10 obturates mouth of pipe 16 the flow of air from each cylinder 11 is cut off therefrom and air remaining under piston 10 must escape through pipe 17, such escape being retarded by a throttle valve 18 so that the sleeve is lowered gently into position.
