Abstract

954,460. Winding webs. STRACHAN & HENSHAW Ltd. March 26, 1963 [March 28, 1962], No. 11860/62. Heading B6B. A web winding apparatus of the kind comprising a reel spindle 13 on to which a web is wound, a pair of driven drums upon which the reel is supported, and bearings to hold the ends of the spindle is characterized in that a doubleacting substantially vertical pneumatic cylinder 17 and piston 18 is disposed above each reel bearing 16. A piston-rod 19 is connected to each bearing and an air pressure control valve 21 is mounted on one of the bearings. The valve 21 is connected by air lines to the cylinders and an air pressure source 28. The valve 21 has a roller 3, Fig. 1 (not shown) engaging an adjustable cam 25, such that upon an increase in diameter of the roll being wound the valve 21 is actuated by, a rod 22 to: cause a variation in air pressure to the pneumatic cylinders. The air lines 26, Fig. 2, are connected to the bottom ends of the cylinders 17 to cause gradual increase of air pressure beneath the pistons 18. Alternatively, the lines are connected to the top ends of the cylinders to provide a decreasing air pressure above the pistons. A pipe 29, Fig. 2, supplies air to the tops of pistons 18 to provide nip pressure at the commencement of winding, air pressure being maintained constant by a non-return or check valve 31 as the pistons 18 rises due to increase in roll diameter.
