Abstract

710,588. Motor vehicles. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.-GES. March 17,1952 [March 15, 1951], No. 6880/52. Class 79(3) [Also in Group XXVII] In a motor vehicle having a transverse rear engine, the engine is enclosed, so as tc exclude dust and dirt, in a chamber. provided witt means for maintaining there in an air pressure above that of the atmosphere. As showr in Fig. 1 applied to a trans verse engine 13 mounted ir the rear of an omnibus and having an exhaust pipe 17 the engine driving the wheels through a change speed gear 14 and a shaft 15, the engine is enclosed in the chamber 12 connected by a tunnel 18 enclosing the gear 14, a radiator 20, a fan 21 to an air intake covered by a filter 19. The air so supplied to the chamber 12 which keeps the pressure therein above atmosphere is partly taken into the carburetter 16 and partly discharged through an opening 22 which is regulatable from the driver's seat. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the tunnel 18 is omitted and the air is drawn into the chamber by a compressor provided solely for that purpose, the intake to the carburetter being provided inside or outside the chamber and an adjustable blow-off valve being provided for the pressure within the chamber.
