Abstract

710,477. Standby supply systems; automatic voltage control systems. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd., and WALKER, A. H. B. May 18, 1953 [July 8, 1952], No. 17145/52. Class 38(4) A D.C. load 20 is normally supplied from an A.C. source 1, 1 over a main rectifier 15 in series with an auxiliary rectifier 14, a standby battery, comprising sections 19a, 19b, being normally on trickle charge from the main rectifier in series with a second auxiliary rectifier 13 in a circuit which may, or may not, include the auxiliary rectifier 14. The section 19b, which is of slightly less voltage than the voltage at the load terminals, is normally isolated from the load circuit by a half-wave rectifier 17 which, however, allows the section to take over the supply to the load immediately upon failure of the main source. Contacts 16, automatically closed as a result of mains failure, subsequently connect the section 19a, which is of relatively low voltage, in series with the section 19b, across the load terminals to restore normal voltage to the load. The auxiliary rectifiers 8. 10 which are automatically regulated to maintain constant battery voltage and constant load voltage by D.C. windings 7, 9 carrying currents controlled by these voltages. Opening of normally closed contacts 18 allows charging of both sections at full rate.
