Abstract
Isonicotinic acid is prepared by oxidizing with aqueous nitric acid or an aqueous mixture of nitric acid and a nitrate at elevated temperature and under super-atmospheric pressure a mixture of pyridine homologues including one containing an alkyl substituent in the paraposition. After oxidation the bulk of the isonicotinic acid is isolated from the resulting liquor and converted to the corresponding hydrazide, while an additional amount is then obtained from the mother liquor by precipitation of the copper salt. The examples describe the oxidation of the following mixtures: b -picoline, g -picoline and 2 : 6-lutidine with or without a -picoline; 2 : 4-lutidine, 2 : 6-lutidine, a -picoline and b -picoline; and pyridine homologues containing 2 : 4 : 6-collidine.
