Abstract
708,757. Umbrellas. BENNETT, A., BENNETT, F. A., and ROBERTSON, R. G. Dec. 3, 1951 [Jan. 30, 1951], No. 28341/51. Class 134 The stretchers 12 of an umbrella are pivotally attached to the runner tube 13 by means of a supporting ring 18 having an internal circumferential groove and a plurality of spaced slots 19 each open at one end. The stretchers are formed at one end with a ball tip or T-head while the adjacent portion of the stretcher is reduced in thickness to form a flattened neck portion 16. The frame is assembled by passing the neck portions 16 of the stretchers through the seats 19 so that the ball tips seat in the internal circumferential groove and then sliding the ring 18 along the runner tube 13 to abut an external projection 20 on the runner tube, which projection closes the ends of the slots 19. The ring 18 may be retained in position by a split ring 21 received partly within a circumferential groove formed externally in the runner tube 13. The ribs 11 are secured in a similar way to a short tube 13<1> which is secured to the sticks 10 by means such as a tack 24.
