Class. 73 An apparatus for applying adhesive tapeto packets comprises a pressure roll 5 mounted on an arm 3 held upright by a spring against a stop 40 and extending. through a slot 2 in a platform 1. Pressuresensitive adhesive tape 35 from a spool 36- passes round a roll 38, a knurled feeding roller 7, and a roll 39 to a pivoted guide plate 9 on which it is held by a spring-urged detent 14 to project in front of the roll 5.. As a package 49 is pushed along the platform 1, it engages the tape and forces the roll 5 backwards its leverage about its pivot 4 always remaining large so that only light pressure by the package is necessary, and since the normal upright position of the lever is forward of its pivot 4, the roll 5 first rises to ensure adhesion of the end of the tape. As the package advances, the guide 9 swings about its pivot 10 to bring the tape 35 into contact with a serrated cutter 19, the feed roller 7 moving away from the tape which is then slack during its application except for the friction of the detent 14. The guide 9 is caused to give a sudden severing movement as the tape 35 contacts the cutter 19 and to remain depressed until the return movement of the lever 3, which is damped by a dash pot.
