Abstract

Poly-alkoxy- and/or -aryloxy -siloxanes are made by reacting a polysiloxane containing -RH,SiO- units, in which R is a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, with a lower monohydric aliphatic alcohol and/or phenol, preferably in the presence of an inorganic or organic compound of alkaline reaction as a catalyst, until some or all the hydrogen atoms have been replaced by alkoxy and/or aryloxy groups. Polysiloxanes specified are the methyl-hydro- and ethylhydropolymers and the copolymer obtained from dimethyl-dichloro- and miethyldichloro-silanes. Catalysts specified are alkali metal hydroxides, alcoholates and phenolates, and organic amines. The alcohates and phenolates may be formed in situ by adding alkali metal to the reaction mixture. Examples are given.
