Abstract
A detergent composition comprising particles of a detergent core surrounded by a coating of numerous hydrated builder particles, is made by agitating a mixture of solid organic detergent particles with a finely divided anhydrous builder which is capable of forming a hydrate, whilst adding moisture. The mixing may be effected by tumbling the ingredients in a rotating drum, and a suitable apparatus is described. The particles which comprise the detergent core may be made by spray or roll drying, spray or roll cooling, framing or grinding. Suitable detergents include soaps; anionic synthetic detergents such as the sulphate and sulphonate detergents, particularly those having an alkyl group of 8 to 18 carbon atoms, e.g. sodium dodecyl benzene p sulphonate; cationic synthetic detergents such as those derived from heterocyclic tertiary amines, e.g. from glyoxalidines substituted in the 2-position with an alkyl group of 11-17 carbon atoms and optionally substituted in the 1-position with a lower alkyl or alkylol group, and salts of polyethylene ethers of fatty amines; and non-ionic synthetic detergents. A number of synthetic detergents are specified. Builders which may be mixed with the detergent in making the core include water-soluble inorganic sulphates, silicates, phosphates, borates and carbonates. The anhydrous builder used for the coating may be an alkali metal, especially sodium or potassium, salt of a phosphoric acid such as sodium tripolyphosphate, tetrasodium pyrophosphate, disodium dihydrogen pyrophosphate, trisodium orthophosphate, and per-salts. Supplementary builders which do not themselves form hydrates may be included in the coating composition, such as sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, higher fatty alcohols such as lauryl and cetyl alcohols, higher fatty acid amides such as lauramide and coconut oil fatty acid ethanolamides, corrosion or tarnish inhibitors such as melamine and diethyl thiourea, and fluorescent dyes such as stilbene derivatives. These builders may be added in powdered or molten form, or sprayed into the mixture as a solution.
