[Also in Group XI] In combustion apparatus for a steam generator comprising a pulverulent fuel burner having a shell formed of water cooled tubes, the burner 2, Fig. 1, is disposed in the interior of the combustion chamber 1 and the combustion gases reverse their direction of flow on leaving an end opening in the burner, so that the latter is surrounded by the combustion gases. Fuel and air is fed into the burner 2 through tangential ducts 6 which pass through walls 8 formed of water cooled tubes serving as baffles in the path of the combustion gases for intercepting slag, and which may be of helical form to maintain the whirling of the gases moving into the upper part of the furnace. In a channel 4 at the lower end of the burner 2 liquid combustion residues are collected and passed to a sump 7. The walls of the burner 2 may be composed wholly of water cooled tubes or comprise steel plates 10, Fig. 3, protected both outside and inside by watercooled tubes 11. The fuel and air ducts 6 are disposed radially of the combustion chamber but have tangentially directed outlets. In a further embodiment the burner has a cylindrical wall formed of water cooled tubes 12, Fig. 5, which extend to the lower end of the burner from a distributor 13 outside the combustion chamber, and at the upper end have sections 14 extending towards the outer wall of the combustion chamber and sections 15 forming a tubular inlet for a fuel and air supply pipe. In further embodiment the burner has the form of a horizontal cylinder.
