Abstract

705,027. Oil diffusion pumps. EDWARDS & CO. (LONDON), Ltd., W. Sept. 4, 1952 [Sept. 17, 1951], No. 21804/51. Class 71. The working fluid in the boiler 3 of an oil diffusion pump 1 provides lubricating and sealing oil for an associated mechanical backing pump 4. In operation oil from a common reservoir 5 is drawn slowly up a pipe 7 and through a control valve 9 into an overflow trough 8 in the backing pump connection 6 and thence down a pipe 10 to the boiler 3 to replace any oil lost from the pump 1. Such lost oil is returned to the pump 4 and through a valve 11 to the reservoir 5. In a modification using a two-stake backing pump the oil supply for the boiler instead of being located within the backing pump connection comprises a sealed container supplied from an end bearing of the backing pump and having an overflow to each stage of the backing pump.
